Our Story

Kawan Dining is a fully licensed modern Southeast Asian restaurant created by Efendi and his wife.

“Kawan” means “friend” — and that’s exactly what they want this place to be: warm, welcoming, and full of passion for great food and good company.

Since arriving in Australia in 2011, Efendi’s passion for food has only grown stronger. Growing up surrounded by the vibrant street food culture of his childhood, he learned early on that food is about more than just eating — it’s about bringing people together. Afternoons spent at his grandparents’ house were full of laughter, stories, and bold, comforting flavors. That spirit of connection is what drives him every day.

Over the years, Efendi has worked in some of Australia’s best modern Asian kitchens, including China Diner (formerly part of the China Doll group) and the renowned Longrain. These experiences shaped his love for Southeast Asian cuisine and taught him how to balance bold flavors with genuine hospitality.

In 2019, Efendi made Launceston his home to pursue permanent residency. Working under Don Cameron at Mudbar Restaurant was a turning point — not just for his cooking, but for how he sees community and connection. Tasmania’s welcoming spirit inspired him and his wife to open Kawan Dining.

Through Kawan Dining, they’re excited to share the flavors they love and the joy that comes from sharing a meal together.
